Murata introduces a new smaller and cheaper LoRaWAN® module in collaboration with Trusted Object packaged as System on Chip
Amsterdam, 30 January 2020: Murata introduces a newer smaller and cheaper LoRa® module which includes TO-Protect-LoRaWAN® - a secure software library specifically intended for industrial IoT devices with the smallest form factor and significantly reduced current consumption. The demonstration was shown at The Things Conference, followed by a workshop on how to use this module for the participants. This module from Murata makes it suitable for a wide range of high-volume applications where small size, long-range, extended battery life, security and a competitive price point are requirements.
LoRaWAN is a low-power, wide-area (LPWA) networking protocol specifically designed to connect battery-powered nodes to the Internet in regional, national or even global networks. It provides many essential features including bi-directional communication, end-to-end security and mobility/localisation services.
Murata’s latest system-on-chip (SoC) LoRa module is based on a Semtech SX1262 RF IC and an STMicroelectronics STM32L0 ARM Cortex-M0 microcontroller. It supports operation within the frequency range 860 to 930 MHz. The rugged device operates at temperatures in the range -40°C to +85°C and includes multiple interfaces and an on-board temperature-controlled crystal oscillator.
Despite the high level of integration and performance, this module measures just 10.0 mm x 8.0 mm x 1.60 mm and is housed in a shielded surface mount package. The device has a single part number globally, simplifying customer supply chains.
As the secure library in this module is already qualified, the design task is simplified and time-to-market is reduced, providing device makers easy access to security expertise. The code is compatible with The Things Industries stack, and existing hardware designs and can be rapidly deployed for production use cases.
